Deadly Attack in Khan Younis
Seven Israeli soldiers were killed on Tuesday when their armored vehicle was struck by an explosive device in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis, marking one of the deadliest incidents for Israeli military forces in Gaza in recent months. The targeted vehicle was a Puma armored combat engineering vehicle, part of the 605th Combat Engineering Battalion, assigned to operations aimed at neutralizing threats and securing movement routes in the operational theater.
The deceased soldiers have been identified as Lt. Matan Shai Yashinovski (21), Staff Sgt. Ronel Ben-Moshe (20), Staff Sgt. Niv Radia (20), Sgt. Ronen Shapiro (19), Sgt. Shahar Manoav (21), Sgt. Maayan Baruch Pearlstein (20), and Staff Sgt. Alon Davidov (21), who served as a medic and was originally from Kiryat Yam. The blast ignited a fire within the armored vehicle, instantly killing all personnel on board despite immediate rescue efforts conducted under heavy fire by accompanying units.
“On my behalf and on behalf of the citizens of Israel, I send my deepest condolences to the families who lost their dearest loved ones,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement following the attack.
In a separate incident occurring on the same day in Khan Younis, two additional Israeli soldiers were wounded, one severely, after militants fired a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) at an armored bulldozer. Both injured soldiers were promptly evacuated for emergency medical treatment at nearby medical facilities, indicating active and ongoing combat scenarios.
Responsibility Claimed by Hamas
The militant group Hamas quickly claimed responsibility for the lethal incident, stating clearly on their social channels that its military wing was behind the explosive device attack. According to Hamas, its fighters ambushed and targeted Israeli soldiers who they claim were taking cover inside a residential building in Khan Younis. The targeted attack appears consistent with previous tactics employed by the group, focusing on armored vehicles and bottlenecks to create strategic losses.
This violent escalation underscores the volatility of the situation, especially following a short-lived ceasefire between Israel and militant factions previously brokered by the United States. This ceasefire had temporarily eased tensions following an intense period marked by direct conflict involving other regional actors, notably Iran.
“The security situation is tense and continues to escalate, and Israel remains committed to bringing those responsible to justice,” an Israeli military spokesperson reaffirmed in a press briefing held following the attack.
Israeli military operations have dramatically intensified since early October 2023, following a series of sustained and coordinated attacks by Hamas-led militants against Israeli towns and security outposts.
