Microsoft Implements Ban on DeepSeek App for Internal Use

In a recent Senate hearing focused on the ongoing artificial intelligence competition with China, Microsoft Vice Chairman and President Brad Smith announced that Microsoft employees are banned from using the AI app DeepSeek. DeepSeek, developed by Chinese startup Deepseek, has raised concerns within Microsoft regarding data security and potential influences from Chinese government propaganda. The primary reason cited for this restriction was that user data collected through DeepSeek is stored on servers based in China, where local laws mandate compliance and cooperation with intelligence agencies.

Smith emphasized the seriousness with which Microsoft approaches these vulnerabilities, highlighting that DeepSeek’s AI model actively censors content sensitive to Chinese authorities and suppresses responses critical of China. “We must always remain vigilant against potential data breaches and any form of propaganda dissemination that might compromise our standards or security,” Smith stated at the hearing.

In addition to restricting internal use, Microsoft refrains from featuring DeepSeek’s app in its official app store, demonstrating caution in both internal application and public distribution. Smith’s disclosure marks the first official acknowledgment from Microsoft about limiting internal employee access to specific AI technologies due to external geopolitical concerns.

DeepSeek’s AI Model Still Available Through Microsoft’s Azure Cloud Platform

While Smith clearly articulated the restrictions placed internally at Microsoft, interestingly, the company continues to offer DeepSeek’s open-source R1 AI model on its Azure cloud service. Customers are able to download and host the model locally, allowing them to eliminate the risk of transmitting sensitive data back to servers based in China. According to Microsoft, the version of the R1 model provided via Azure has been specifically “modified” to remove what the company referred to as “harmful side effects.” The details of these alterations, however, have not yet been fully disclosed. Despite offering the revised R1 model through Azure, Microsoft stresses that this access does not grant direct interaction with DeepSeek’s original chatbot application.
